Johannesburg, South Africa – Global integrated chemical and energy company Sasol is proud to sponsor the first-ever African major stopover of Energy Observer, the world's premier renewable energy hydrogen-powered vessel and a symbol of renewable energy transition.
A remarkable floating laboratory showcasing the potential of sustainable energy systems by harnessing solar, wind, and hydrogen power, Energy Observer will be docked at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town from 12 – 20 June 2023.
South Africa, like many countries, has set ambitious decarbonisation targets, and Sasol is fully aligned with these goals. By leveraging its technological expertise and experience, Sasol aims to play a leading role in shaping and enabling the transition to a low-carbon economy in South Africa while also decarbonising its own operations. Its sponsorship of Energy Observer, a pioneering vessel that showcases innovative solutions for a sustainable future, exemplifies its commitment to decarbonization and the vital role of collaboration among various stakeholders.

Energy Observer will host an educational exhibition village at the V&A Waterfront which will be open to the public. This will showcase the latest innovative technologies in the areas of renewable energy solutions including green hydrogen. Sasol’s exhibition, which starts on the 14th of June, focuses on the role of technology in enabling decarbonisation, thereby illustrating how it is innovating for a better world. Activities will include live demonstration of low carbon solutions including green hydrogen, interactions with Sasol’s Research & Technology and team, and a showcase of the future of mobility. Guests at the Sasol exhibition will also have an opportunity to have personalised tour of the Energy Observer vessel.
Further, on the 16th of June, Sasol will host a special event attended by Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Honourable Buti Manamela, where learners from local schools will be engaged about bursary opportunities as well as get exposure to possible careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics and innovation.
On the 17th of June, Sasol with showcase our ‘forecourt of the future’ with electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles being displayed and convenience centre partners as part of the exhibition. This day will be open to the public and Sasol will share its vision to decarbonise our convenience centres and ‘innovate for a better world’.
